Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, has released the following message on the occasion of Corpus Christi 2025 (Thursday 19th June, 2025), which also coincides with the occasion of Labour Day: “ My fellow citizens, Today, we join our Christian community in reflecting on one of the most sacred and profound mysteries of the faith — the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This day reminds us that God is not distant, but with us, walking alongside us through every joy and trial. Jesus said in John 6:51, ‘I am the living bread that came down from Heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.’ This declaration is a promise of eternal life, but also a call to live in the spirit of Christ daily — to serve with love, to act with compassion, and to be present for one another in times of need. Labour Day is more than a public holiday — it is a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for fairness, dignity, and justice in the workplace. We remember the great leaders of our labour movement who, in the face of oppression and exploitation, stood tall and demanded not just better wages and conditions, but a voice in the decisions that shape our country. Khemraj Rampersad, a resident of Claxton Bay, is currently facing a very difficult situation, as his 69-year-old mother, Hasina Hosein, has been hospitalized three (3) times in January 2025 due to epileptic seizures and has also been diagnosed with early-stage dementia. Given her condition, she requires full-time care, and as a result, Khemraj is unable to work. He cannot trust a stranger to care for her, especially considering how vulnerable and unpredictable her condition can be. He has learnt how to manage her seizures and understand her needs, which is why it is crucial that he continue to care for her himself.  The financial burden has been overwhelming, as her old-age pension is not enough to cover all her needs.
