Met Office Issues Hazardous Seas Alert Until Thursday Evening

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Hazardous Seas Alert (Yellow Level) for a total of seventy-four (74) hours. The Alert begins at 4:00 PM today (Monday 2nd March, 2026) and will remain in effect until 6:00 PM on Thursday (5th March, 2026) for Northern and Eastern-exposed coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago. According to the Met Office, the sea conditions along the Northern and Eastern-exposed coastal areas, including offshore regions, are expected to deteriorate to rough conditions, with wave heights maintaining in excess of 2.5m and reaching up to 3m. This is due to relatively strong winds that are agitating the sea surface, leading to large waves and potentially dangerous sea conditions.  Impacts Agitated seas are likely to be particularly perilous for offshore activities. According to the Met Office, high energy, long period Northerly swells are expected to produce large breakers along near-shore Northern coastal areas. This event can cause large, battering waves, exacerbated at High Tides, along these shorelines. Near-shore activities, including fishing, swimming and boat moorings can be disrupted. Impacts may also include intrusion of salt water and displacement of sand, further than the average reach point. EMA Urges Precautions Amid Elevated Saharan Dust Levels

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) is advising that, while particulate matter data is temporarily unavailable on the EMA's website and social media platforms , due to ongoing maintenance and critical technical upgrades to the Authority's air quality monitoring equipment, other credible local monitoring systems are reporting elevated particulate levels consistent with significant Saharan dust activity across the region. 8 Skiers Dead In Avalanche Near Lake Tahoe, California — 1 Missing Also Presumed Dead

Eight (8) people are confirmed dead and another presumed dead following a devastating avalanche during a backcountry skiing expedition on the California side of Lake Tahoe on Tuesday (17th February, 2026). The bodies of those killed remain at the scene, where significant avalanche risk persists. Six (6) others in the party survived while one (1) person is still missing, though presumed dead, officials said, as searchers fight near-whiteout conditions in the area. The survivors range in age from thirty (30) to fifty-five (55) years old. According to reports, the avalanche, about the length of a football field, struck around 11:30 AM local time on Tuesday, sometime after the group of skiers left a set of backcountry huts at Frog Lake, according to Blackbird Mountain Guides, which had four (4) guides leading the trip.
