The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs said it has noted the “misleading and outright inaccurate reporting” in Friday’s Guardian Newspaper (25th July, 2026) with the headline “US Slaps T&T with 10% Tariff.” According to the Ministry, “This front-page story demonstrates the absence of diligent, intelligent and responsible journalism, which can mislead members of the business community and other commentators.” In a Media Release on Friday, the Ministry said it wishes to “categorically state that the United States of America has not applied any new tariffs on exports from Trinidad and Tobago . ” The Ministry states that, “Members of the public may recall that via Executive Order 14326 of 31 July 2025, United States President Donald Trump unveiled new reciprocal tariffs on more than seventy (70) countries globally, including Trinidad and Tobago. The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (Bank) has issued a statement regarding the ongoing investigation into a quantity of US Dollar (USD) currency that was earmarked to be shipped out of the country. According to reports, US $2 million in cash, allegedly stashed in a white crocus bag, was seized by Customs and Excise Officials on 25th June, 2026 at the South Terminal of Piarco International Airport. The cash, which was linked to NCB Merchant Bank, was being transported to Miami via Jamaica when Officials intervened over documentation and accountability requirements. NCB Merchant Bank has maintained that the money belongs to the bank and formed part of a legitimate transaction conducted in the ordinary course of business with another regulated financial institution. A plane carrying twelve (12) people — a pilot and eleven (11) skydivers — while on a skydiving outing in Missouri, crashed in a field and became engulfed in flames on Sunday morning (14th June, 2026), killing all aboard. The plane is said to have turned around for an unknown reason before crashing near a Highway. Director of the Bates County Emergency Management Agency and the Acting Airport Manager, Dennis Jacobs, said he suspects the plane experienced power issues prior to the devastating crash. The Customs and Excise Division said it successfully intercepted a passenger attempting to smuggle marijuana into Trinidad and Tobago through the Piarco International Airport on Sunday (17th May, 2026). According to the Division in a Media Release today (Monday 18th May, 2026), “During routine passenger clearance operations, Customs Officers at the Airport referred a 22-year-old British national to the Red Line for further examination of their luggage. During the examination, Officers discovered a quantity of plant-like material concealed within the passenger’s baggage. Officers attached to the Preventive Branch were subsequently contacted and responded to the scene, where field testing confirmed the substance to be marijuana. The Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago is confirming that a Ukrainian aircraft, Flight No. CVK-7078, arrived in Trinidad and Tobago from the Bahamas on Thursday (14th May, 2026), for a technical refueling stop. The aircraft was en route to Cape Verde, with a final destination of Libya. According to the Authority, “The planned redirection of domestic passengers through international checkpoints will not take effect at this time. We appreciate the continued co-operation of our stakeholders and the public as preparations continue.” All domestic passengers will therefore continue to be processed through the Domestic Departures area on the ground floor of the Piarco International Airport, with standard check-in and security procedures remaining in place.
