Death Toll Over 360 In Nepal And Tibet After Devastating Floods — More Than 1,400 Missing

UPDATE (29/08/26): The death toll and the number of missing continues to rise several days after catastrophic floods devastated the region. Officials now say more than 670 people have been killed, and around 3,000 are missing in Nepal. 

The rush to find survivors is growing more desperate by the hour as frantic searches and rescue operations intensify.

A massive search resumed today (Thursday 27th August, 2026) for hundreds of missing people along the Nepal-China border, following a deadly rush of water and mud, several stories high, which swept through communities on Wednesday (26th August, 2026) after an apparent glacier collapse in the region.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) first reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake early Wednesday, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) North of Kathmandu, near the border. However, the agency later updated its analysis, stating that the seismic event was instead a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse that sent debris flowing downstream.

Climate experts at the Kathmandu-based International Center for Integrated Mountain Development said an avalanche from a glacier likely caused Wednesday’s horrific flash flood. They said in a statement that water levels at one point on the Trishuli River rose by as much as 9 meters (27 feet) in half an hour.

Videos of the disaster showed people running before the floodwaters swallowed them up and washed out buildings and bridges. More than 360 people were killed, according to local Police, and more than 1,300 were missing, including scores of foreigners and pilgrims. Hundreds of others are said to have been displaced across the Himalayan region.

The steep slopes and lush valleys below the Himalayan mountain range — home to many of the world’s highest peaks and remaining glaciers — are especially vulnerable to flooding and landslides. Melting glaciers have become more common because of human-caused climate change.

The disaster has left at least 910 people missing in Nepal, while authorities in Tibet, an autonomous region of China, reported at least three (3) dead and 558 missing.

Nepalese officials said that dozens of bridges were destroyed and nearly 40 kilometers (25 miles) of roads were damaged, complicating search efforts. The Nepalese army has rescued more than 100 people by helicopter, according to Army Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet.

Chairman of the Nepal Red Cross Society, Bishal Kumar Bhandari, said the agency has shifted its focus from rescue to large-scale relief operations in the flood-hit districts. He said that around 1,200 people were displaced from at least three (3) villages.


In Tibet, a gushing mudslide that struck on Wednesday near the land border crossing of Gyirong Port, engulfed a multistory port building and left mud in the surrounding areas that was more than 1.5 meters (5 feet) deep on average, Chinese State broadcaster CCTV reported. Roads leading to the crossing were all damaged, while secondary collapses or landslides might occur as rain continued in the area, it added.

China’s Premier, Li Qiang, arrived today (Thursday 27th August, 2026) in Gyirong to direct rescue efforts, alongside 500 military and paramilitary personnel. Military helicopters circled overhead, searching for survivors, assessing the disaster and mapping out possible rescue and evacuation routes.

Chinese authorities have warned that the newly-formed lake at the confluence of the Tsogyal and the Purupqiangzangbu rivers is overflowing and may soon burst.

Among the missing are 517 foreigners, according to Nepal’s tourism board, which include 178 people from India, more than sixty (60) from the United States and people from thirty (30) other countries, including Ukraine, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Japan, the tourism board said.

Many of the missing may have been on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a sacred site for Hindus, Buddhists and others.

Seventy-seven (77) people from one pilgrimage group were caught in the floods at the immigration office at the border, according to a post on X from Indian spiritual guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, who said in an emotional video that the group included twenty-two (22) Americans and others from various countries. He said that there was no official information on their whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department said ninety (90) Americans are unaccounted for in China and Nepal after the flood. The department said it was unaware of any U.S. deaths and that three (3) Americans were rescued.

The increasingly unstable Himalayan ice system threatens communities, infrastructure and water supplies across one of the world’s most densely populated regions.

The region saw similar flash floods in August 2025, when a glacial lake in Tibet overflowed because of high temperatures. Nine (9) people were killed in that disaster, and critical infrastructure, including a bridge connecting Nepal and China, was damaged.

22-Year-Old Man Shot Dead In Morvant — Face Disfigured In Hail of Bullets

A man is dead following a brutal shooting incident in Morvant early this morning (Tuesday 8th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Tylan Hinkson, aka “Papa,”of Redwood Street, Morvant. His face was said to have been disfigured in a hail of bullets from a high-powered weapon. According to reports, Hinkson was ambushed and shot near Second Caledonia Road, in the vicinity of Juman, during the early morning hours. Police and Emergency Health Services were notified and responded to the scene. A man is dead and another listed in serious condition at Hospital following a horrific road traffic accident in Cocorite on Wednesday night (9th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Binyameen Rahaman of Warren Road, Cunupia. The body of a missing pensioner was found under large suitcases at a house in Curepe on Monday afternoon (7th September, 2026). BODY of Woman Found Inside Abandoned Security Booth In San Fernando — Police Investigating

The decomposing body of a woman was found inside an abandoned security booth on the compound of an old panyard in San Fernando on Wednesday morning (16th September, 2026). TWO (2) Prison Officers And Inmate At Golden Grove Charged With Conspiracy Offences

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), two (2) Prison Officers attached to the Golden Grove Prison, Arouca, and an inmate on remand for murder, were expected to appear before a Master of the High Court on Thursday (17th September, 2026), charged with multiple offences, arising out of an attempt to smuggle illegal contraband into the prison in August 2026.
