Prime Minister Heads To Parliament On Wednesday To Extend State of Emergency

According to the Office of the Attorney General, at a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) on Friday evening (5th June, 2026), the Prime Minister and members of the Council received and reviewed reports on the States of Emergency implemented between December 2024 and May 2026. In a Media Release a short while ago this afternoon (Sunday 7th June, 2026), the Attorney General’s Office said, “The reports highlighted analyses of datasets related to significant local and international threats to State security. The reports revealed that all three (3) SOEs were associated with meaningful disruptions in all categories of datasets reviewed and analyzed.” The Office added, “After examining the reports and advice from members of the NSC, the Prime Minister has decided that the Government will go to Parliament to request an extension of the State of Emergency for a further three (3) months. UPDATE 8:  Police have confirmed that the 26-year-old man in custody is to be charged with murder following investigations surrounding the death of 12-year-old Mercedes Layne. The suspect has been publicly identified as Richard Renales of Dickie Trace, Beach Road, Palo Seco. Renales is expected to appear before a High Court Master on Thursday (11th June, 2026). The charge is expected to be formally laid by Woman Corporal Dyer-Baptiste of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region III. UPDATE 7:  New surveillance video has emerged, recorded on Saturday (6th June, 2026), which shows the suspect’s station wagon entering Los Iros Road, where he was supposed to drop off Mercedes, before coming to a stop near a supermarket. Government Announces Mid-Year Budget Review On Monday 15th June, 2026

The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago announced in Parliament this afternoon (Friday 5th June, 2026) that the Mid-Year Budget Review will be presented by Minister of Finance, the Honourable Davendranath Tancoo, at 10:30 AM on Monday 15th June, 2026.   Prior to that date, the Finance Bill (2026) will be read at 10:30 AM on Wednesday 10th June, 2026, followed by a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee at 1:30 PM on Friday 12th June, 2026. Government has announced the Mid Year Budget review will be presented by Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo on June 15. Chaguanas Vendor Arrested After Selling Potatoes From Dump Along Narsaloo Ramaya Road

UPDATE 2:   The vendor, identified as 35-year-old Rajindera Ali of Enterprise, Chaguanas, appeared before a Chaguanas District Judge on Thursday (4th June 2026), where he was granted $20,000 bail after pleading not guilty to charges stemming from the incident. Ali was arrested following an operation along Narsaloo Ramaya Road, near Price Plaza. Investigators claim that during enquiries, the vendor admitted to obtaining several sacks of potatoes from the Claxton Bay Dump before allegedly offering them for sale. He has been charged with littering and illegally operating a roadside stall. However, Police say additional charges may be laid, pending the outcome of public health tests being conducted on the potatoes. Authorities are seeking to determine whether the produce posed a risk to consumers and whether any public health laws were breached. Attorney General: State of Emergency Remains In Effect Until Midnight On 17th June, 2026

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking to clarify misinformation currently circulating on certain social media platforms regarding the duration of the ongoing State of Public Emergency.  In a Media Release this afternoon (Wednesday 3rd June, 2026), the Attorney General’s Office said, “Pursuant to the procedures established by the Constitution, the State of Emergency remains in effect until Midnight on June 17th, 2026, and not June 3rd, 2026 , as erroneously reported on these social media platforms.” According to the Office, the facts surrounding the State of Emergency are as follows: By Legal Notice No. 39 of 2026, the President declared, by Proclamation, that a State of Public Emergency existed in Trinidad and Tobago with effect from March 3, 2026. The Route 2 Maxi Taxi Association has announced a return to full service by 6:00 PM this afternoon (Tuesday 2nd June, 2026) — bringing an early end to their planned three-day protest action , which saw thousands of commuters experiencing hardships for public transportation. Speaking with I.A.N. News a short while ago, Vice President of the Association, Parsana Rampersad, confirmed that the entire complement of maxi taxis assigned to the route will be back on the road by the stated time later today. TTPS Steps In To Assist Stranded Commuters During Maxi Taxi Strike

In response to the ongoing maxi taxi strike , which commenced today (Monday 1st June, 2026), and is expected to continue until Wednesday (3rd June, 2026), the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has extended a helping hand to members of the public affected by the disruption. In a Media Release this afternoon, the TTPS said, “Acting on the directive of Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, ACP Specialized Support, Brian Sooden, deployed five (5) TTPS maxi taxis to the City Gate transportation hub in Port-of-Spain this afternoon, to assist commuters travelling along the various affected routes.” The TTPS prioritized schoolchildren, the elderly and other vulnerable commuters, with additional trips scheduled to assist those affected by the disruption. T&T Government Seeking To Upgrade Machine Readable Passports To Electronic Passports

The Ministry of Homeland Security is inviting Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified entities for the upgrade of the Passport Issuing and Control System to an E-Passport platform. The Ministry said on Monday (25th May, 2026) that the intent of this Expression of Interest (EOI) is to “identify private and public sector entities that would be interested in providing the service to Upgrade the Passport Issuing and Control System from Machine Readable Passport (MRP) to Electronic Passport (E-Passport) Issuing and Control System for the Immigration Division, Ministry of Homeland Security (MHS), Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.” The Ministry notes that it will “carefully review all submissions to ensure that entities possess the necessary resources, expertise and experience to provide this service. Landlord Business Surcharge Registration Deadline Extended To 30th June, 2026 Following Public Engagement

The Ministry of Finance is advising landlords and rent-collecting agents that the deadline for mandatory registration under the Landlord Business Surcharge has been extended to 30th June, 2026. In a Media Release today (Tuesday 26th May, 2026), the Ministry said the extension follows public engagement undertaken by Minister of Finance, the Honourable Davendranath Tancoo, MP, and is “intended to give citizens additional time to complete the registration process, organize the required documents and avoid penalties.” The Minister recently visited Board of Inland Revenue (BIR) offices in San Fernando, Port-of-Spain and Tunapuna , where he observed landlords coming forward and making efforts to comply with the new registration requirements. UPDATE (31/05/26):  UNC Freeport/Chickland Councillor Anil Baliram is no longer on a ventilator and is now breathing on his own with oxygen assistance, according to authorities at the San Fernando General Hospital. It is unknown at this time whether the Councillor will experience any long-term effects following the incident a week ago at his Couva home. UPDATE (26/05/26): UNC Freeport/Chickland Councillor Anil Baliram remains hospitalized, surrounded by family and friends who are offering continuous prayers for his recovery.
