Here’s How Much Your Monthly NIS Contribution Will Increase From 5th January, 2026

A phased 6% increase to the National Insurance System (NIS) contribution rate was announced by the Honourable Davendranath Tancoo, M.P., Minister of Finance, during his National Budget 2026 presentation on Monday (13th October, 2025). There will be an increase by 3% (from 13.2% to 16.2%), effective from 5th January, 2026, followed by another 3% increase (from 16.2% to 19.2%) from 4th January, 2027, with the aim of saving this critical institution from bankruptcy, and thus preserving the benefits for future generations.

The National Insurance Board of Trinidad and Tobago (NIBTT) provided Guardian Media with a breakdown today (Thursday 16th October, 2025), showing how the proposed increase in NIS contributions will affect workers across all income levels, as follows:

The NIBTT notes that while it understands the concerns of some citizens who will soon be required to contribute more to NIS, it believes the proposed increases are reasonable.

The Board maintains that the adjustment is necessary to protect contributors’ benefits and ensure the long-term stability of the fund.

More on this as it becomes available.
