Rig 110 Collapse: Well Services Identifies Location of Body of Missing Employee Pete Phillip
Well Services Petroleum Company Limited (Well Services) said it believes they have identified the location of the body of Mr. Pete Phillip and care must be taken as they seek to retrieve him. Phillip, a Well Services employee, was onboard during the Rig 110 incident on the morning of Sunday 22nd December, 2024. He was thrown into the ocean when Rig 110 collapsed, and remains missing to-date. The company has since transitioned from a rescue operation to a recovery operation.
In a Media Release on Thursday (9th January, 2025), the company said, “Well Services remains fully committed to the ongoing search and recovery efforts for Mr. Pete Phillip. Our team continues to work tirelessly throughout this challenging phase, ensuring that every step of the process is approached with the utmost diligence and dedication. We recognize that the length of this process has caused frustration and concern among Mr. Phillip's family members, and we share in their distress. It is important, however, to clarify that the current phase involves a distinct set of challenges that require a tailored approach. These include rigorous safety assessments, logistical co-ordination, and adherence to established protocols to ensure the well-being of all individuals involved.”Well Services added, “In accordance with guidance from OSH Authority (OSHA) and in recognition of the inherent risks associated with the recovery operation, Well Services is actively securing specialized equipment, including a heavy-lift barge and crane barges, to name a few, to support the operation. Additionally, a comprehensive safety plan is being developed and will be submitted to OSHA prior to the commencement of any further recovery activities.”
According to Wells, “In discussions with the family, we have communicated that we believe we have identified the location of Mr. Pete Phillip. However, to safely reach that location, it is imperative that the Rig is first stabilized to mitigate any further risks. Failure to do so will further jeopardize the safety of other personnel involved. We remain committed to carrying out this process with the utmost attention to safety and efficiency. While we are doing everything possible to expedite the process, each phase must be carried out with meticulous care and precision. Our primary focus is the safety of the recovery team and all personnel on-site, and we are committed to moving forward as swiftly as these critical procedures allow.”
The Media Release concluded by saying, “We continue to work closely with the relevant authorities and the family, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available. Our thoughts remain with Mr. Phillip’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Investigations are continuing.
More on this as it becomes available.
