T&T Fugitive Extradited To United States For Attempted Murder, Faces 25 Years In Prison
According to the United States Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago, Vincent Roberts was extradited from Trinidad and Tobago to the United States on Wednesday (5th February, 2025), to face charges for attempted murder and weapons possession. If convicted, he will face a possible sentence of twenty-five (25) years in prison. He was charged for the crimes in the State of New York in September 2021.
In a Media Release today (Thursday 6th February, 2025), the Embassy said, Roberts, a U.S. permanent resident, fled the United States to Trinidad and Tobago in December 2022 while out on bond awaiting trial. In January 2023, a warrant of arrest was issued for Roberts in New York for one (1) count of attempted murder, one (1) count of attempted assault, and two (2) counts of criminal possession of a weapon. U.S. law enforcement authorities requested Roberts’s extradition in January 2024. He was arrested in Laventille on 17th April, 2024. On 22nd January, 2025, Reginald Armour, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, signed a Warrant of Removal for Roberts.Roberts was escorted from Port-of-Spain to the United States by Deputy Marshals from the United States Marshals Service and Special Agents from the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service.
The Embassy notes that, “Playing key roles and critical to the successful extradition were the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the Central Authority of the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs, Trinidad and Tobago Customs and Immigration, the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, U.S Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of International Affairs (OIA), the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and the Kings County, New York District Attorney’s Office.”
U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Jenifer Neidhart de Ortiz said, “This extradition is the third fugitive return in the last three (3) months and is indicative of the strong law enforcement relationships and close co-operation between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, as we continue to work together to make our countries safer.”
