63-Year-Old Barrackpore Man Dies After Allegedly Falling From Coconut Tree — Police Investigating
UPDATE (22/01/26): Brandon Lalbeharry has been granted bail in the sum of $400,000 after being recently charged with manslaughter of his father, Ramesh. Following his arrest at his father’s funeral, Brandon was formally charged and later appeared before the Court, where bail was granted.
UPDATE (17/01/26): As family members laid Ramesh Lalbeharry to rest at the Monkeytown Public Cemetery in Barrackpore today (Saturday 17th January, 2026), his son Brandon was arrested at the scene and taken away moments after paying his final respects at the funeral. He had been seen moments earlier standing beside his mother, Nimmi, who broke down in tears just before Officers placed her son in handcuffs, but allowed him to view the burial before he was taken away.
Lalbeharry, who was found to have been beaten to death, contradicting the initial story given to Police and Hospital staff that he fell from a coconut tree, was buried following a brief funeral service conducted under Christian rites at the cemetery.
UPDATE (15/01/26): A post-mortem examination was conducted on Wednesday (14th January, 2026) at the Forensic Science Centre by Forensic Pathologist Dr. Parthasarathi Pramanik, in the presence of investigators. According to the findings, Lalbeharry suffered severe trauma to the chest and head, including multiple broken ribs, injuries which Dr. Pramanik stated were not consistent with a fall from a tree. Instead, the injuries pointed to multiple blunt-force trauma caused by excessive force, possibly inflicted with an object.
The post-mortem certificate lists the cause of death as shock due to haemorrhage, polytrauma, and multiple blunt-force injuries, with coronary atherosclerosis noted as a contributing condition. The manner of death has been classified as a homicide.
A man has died after reportedly falling from a coconut tree at his home in Barrackpore on New Year’s Day (Thursday 1st January, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 63-year-old Ramesh Lalbeharry of Hassanali Trace South, Lower Barrackpore. He was a father of two (2) and grandfather of four (4).
Lalbeharry was with his wife, Nimmi, 59, his son, Brandon (aka ‘Tony’), 41, and other relatives at their home, liming and drinking White Oak on New Year's Day, when, according to Brandon (pictured below), his father left the group.
Speaking with reporters at the family's home on Tuesday (6th January, 2026), Brandon said, “He was taking long, so I went to see what was going on. I see him on the ground.”
Brandon said that together with his cousin, they lifted Lalbeharry and placed him in a hammock. He added that his father did not complain of pain and had no visible injuries. “He was normal, we didn't see nothing because everybody was drinking, he didn't complain, and normally he does rest, and within a day he does revive and do his stuff.”
Brandon said he later left his parents at home and went to a bar. Upon returning home on Friday (2nd January, 2026), however, his mother told him that his father had been rolling in the yard because he was intoxicated.
His mother said Lalbeharry stumbled and hit his head a few times while she was trying to get him inside.
Brandon said his father later began complaining of pain and “wasn't looking good,” but they were unable to get transport to take him to the Hospital.
He said he called an Ambulance on Saturday morning (3rd January, 2026), but after waiting for some time, a friend eventually took his father to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries, around 8:00 AM on Tuesday morning (6th January, 2026).
An autopsy has been ordered to ascertain his exact cause of death.
However, relatives have since disputed Brandon’s version of events, accusing him of beating his father with his pellet gun — leading to his subsequent death from those injuries.
Denying allegations against him, Brandon said he loves and cares for his parents. “I had a close relationship with my father. We drink together. We lime together. We always happy together.”
As investigators await the results of the autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre, Police have classified his death as unnatural.
Investigations are continuing by Officers of the Barrackpore Police Station.
More on this as it becomes available.
