Approved Vehicle Testing Stations Now Expanded To Inspect Public Service Vehicles, From 5th January, 2026

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is reminding the public that, effective from 5th January, 2026, approved Vehicle Testing Stations, including the Vehicle Management Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (VMCOTT), will be permitted to conduct inspections for Public Service vehicles with a tare weight not exceeding 2,270 kilogrammes. As defined in section 2 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chap. 48:50, a Public Service vehicle is a motor vehicle used for carrying passengers for hire.

In a Media Release today (Friday 2nd January, 2026), the Ministry said, additionally, VMCOTT will be authorized to conduct inspections for goods vehicles exceeding 3,200 kilogrammes of Maximum Gross Weight (MGW). However, Public Service vehicles with a tare weight exceeding 2,270 kilogrammes will be required to conduct their inspections at the Licensing Office.

The Ministry is reiterating that motor vehicle inspection is a “legal requirement, and all vehicle owners are reminded to ensure compliance with the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 48.50.”

Members of the public are further advised of the following inspection requirements:

  • Drivers must present their original Certified Copy, Insurance Certificate, and Driver's Permit.
  • Any engine or colour change must be completed at a Licensing Office and must be reflected on the Certified Copy.
  • Vehicles must be engine-washed and under-washed prior to inspection.
  • Vehicles must not be sprayed with shock oil until the inspection process has been fully completed.

The Ministry said it “thanks the public for its continued co-operation as we enhance service delivery and uphold national road safety standards.”
