ODPM: NO Tsunami Threat To Trinidad And Tobago After Magnitude 7.6 Earthquake Near Honduras

A major magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck in the Western Caribbean Sea at 7:23 PM last night (Saturday 8th February, 2025). The earthquake was initially reported as a magnitude 8.0 but was subsequently revised to 7.6.

Contrary to several social media posts, however, Trinidad and Tobago (and by extension, the remainder of the Eastern Caribbean) is not, and has not been under any tsunami threat from this earthquake.

This was confirmed by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) in a Public Advisory issued at 10:30 PM on Saturday night, which states: “Please be advised that the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) is aware that a 7.6 M earthquake occurred in the vicinity of Honduras at 7:23 PM TT time. The public is informed that there is NO threat to Trinidad and Tobago. The ODPM will continue to monitor and provide updates if necessary. Thank you.”

Based on available information, there have been no reports of significant structural damage or casualties directly resulting from this magnitude 7.6 earthquake. However, tsunami advisories were issued for several regions, including Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cuba, Honduras, and the Cayman Islands. These advisories led to precautionary evacuations and warnings to stay away from coastal areas.

While the potential for destruction from multiple tsunamis was a concern, as of the latest updates, there have been no significant reported impacts. Authorities advised vigilance, but the immediate tsunami threat has passed.

More on this as it becomes available.
