UNC Meets With Several Groups To Forge ‘Coalition of Interests’ For 2025 General Elections
Recognizing the need to “rebuild Trinidad and Tobago after ten (10) continuous years of destruction, devastation, and tyranny under the PNM,” the United National Congress (UNC) said it met with Laventille Out-Reach For Vertical Enrichment (LOVE), the People's Empowerment Party (PEP) and the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU), accompanied by the Contractors & General Workers Trade Union, the Trinidad and Tobago Postal Workers Union, and the Transport and Industrial Workers Union, at UNC Headquarters in Chaguanas on Tuesday (11th February, 2025), to work out details of the ‘Coalition of Interests’ for the 2025 General Elections, in which all groups agreed to participate.
In a Media Release on Wednesday (12th February, 2025), UNC Public Relations Officer, Dr. Kirk Meighoo, said, “Details about the coalition were discussed with a view toward finalization, including the EBC symbols to be used, seats to be fought, financial resources, election paraphernalia, human resources, meetings, messaging, social media, technical resources, communications and messaging team, voter regularization, legal compliance and ethics, election training and development, finance and fundraising capacity, policy and manifesto development, events planning and logistics capabilities, social media and traditional media resources, among other issues.”The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar noted that these discussions have been ongoing for roughly one (1) year, and it was recognized that currently, time is of the essence.
According to Dr. Meighoo, “Notably, the OWTU's general membership has formally endorsed the union's participation in the Coalition of Interests, and a Worker's Agenda with twenty (20) core commitments has been agreed upon by the UNC and OWTU. All members of the Coalition agreed that international observers are absolutely necessary for the 2025 General Elections. It was also noted that the current Assistant Secretary-General of CARICOM — the only body to whom the Prime Minister has written to provide election observers — is the wife of Reginald Armour, the highly partisan PNM Attorney-General who has been disqualified from appearing in a U.S. Court due to his misrepresentations in a sworn affidavit.”
The Media Release added, “All Coalition partners also condemned Prime Minister Keith Rowley for remaining in office until his new salary and backpay begins at the end of February. They also criticized the Government for their sham consultation in appointing a new Commissioner for the Elections and Boundaries Commission [EBC], which does not have a single member from Central or South Trinidad.”
The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Coalition of Interests is open to other participants to join. However, the Coalition has ruled out working with the NTA.”
More on this as it becomes available.
