Acting Prime Minister Stuart Young Wants To Increase Penalties/Sentencing For Those Who Commit Heinous Acts Against Women
Prime Minister (Ag.) the Hon. Stuart Young SC, says he intends to bring legislation to Parliament to increase penalties and sentencing for those who commit heinous acts against women. The Acting Prime Minister made the statement earlier today (Friday 7th March, 2025) during International Women's Day celebrations held at the Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s.
The International Women’s Day theme for 2025 is “Accelerate Action.”
Prime Minister (Ag.) Young said, “As a society, we must stand up and let the persons who are committing these acts against our women and children know we are not accepting it. We will implement, via legislation, stronger penalties and sentencing for those serious crimes across the board.”
The Prime Minister (Ag.) also intends to present to the Cabinet, a proposal to implement programmes through the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services. These programmes will allow trained professionals in the fields of psychiatry and psychology to provide a high level of professional support across Trinidad and Tobago, particularly in areas and sectors of society where individuals lack access to such services.
In delivering remarks, the Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister for Gender and Child Affairs, the Hon. Ayanna Webster-Roy, emphasized that while the Ministry continues to adopt a whole-of-government approach to addressing issues affecting women and girls, a broader, all-of-society effort is essential. She highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for women to advance, stating, “Ensuring our women have the opportunity to accelerate...accelerate action requires all hands-on deck. Creating a better Trinidad and Tobago for our women and our girls is not just the Government’s business — it’s all our business.”
Minister Webster-Roy also saluted the women who laid the foundation, enabling others to stand as leaders.
Several Ministers, Members of Parliament, and specially invited guests were also in attendance at today’s event.
