UNC: Blatant Attempt To Bypass Democracy, Install Stuart Young As Unelected Leader, Will Not Go Unchallenged

In a Media Release on Wednesday (12th March, 2025), the United National Congress (UNC) said it continued its “unstoppable march to victory on Monday night at a massive, high-energy Cottage Meeting in Moruga. With a packed venue and an electrified crowd, the UNC left no doubt: we are in election mode, and we are ready to take back Government!”

According to Dr. Kirk Meighoo, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the UNC, “The party, now fully in election mode, showed its strength and determination to reclaim Government and rescue Trinidad and Tobago from ten (10) years of PNM failure. With a packed venue and an enthusiastic crowd, the speakers delivered fiery addresses, demonstrating the UNC's strength, readiness, and commitment to rebuilding Trinidad and Tobago.”

MP Michelle Benjamin, Senator Anil Roberts, former Senator Sean Sobers, and Attorney-at-Law Jagdeo Singh took to the stage, setting the tone for the night's feature address by Political Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC (pictured above greeting a child at the Cottage Meeting in Moruga).

Challenging the Unconstitutional “Coronation” of Stuart Young

In what Dr. Meighoo described as an “hour-long, powerful and game-changing address” by the UNC Leader, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar laid out a clear vision for the future of Trinidad and Tobago. In a major statement, she vowed that the UNC will not allow Prime Minister Keith Rowley's “unconstitutional and illegal transfer of power” to Stuart Young on 16th March, 2025 to go unchallenged. She made it crystal clear: For Rowley's plan to be legitimate, he must resign as PNM Leader — just like Justin Trudeau did in Canada — or dissolve Parliament and call elections. The Media Release added, “This blatant attempt to bypass democracy and install Stuart Young as an unelected leader will not go unchallenged. The UNC will fight this assault on our democracy with every legal and political tool available.”

Reaffirming UNC Principles

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar grounded her speech in the UNC's constitutional principles, emphasizing the party's commitment to democracy, justice, and human dignity. Quoting the party’s foundational values, she reaffirmed the UNC's belief in a society where economic systems serve the common good, labor rights are protected, and freedom is rooted in moral and spiritual integrity.

“When the UNC Wins, Everybody Wins”

The Leader reiterated the party’s campaign slogan, contrasting it starkly with the PNM's record: “Because if the PNM win, you lose!” She lambasted Stuart Young's tenure as Minister of National Security, citing his failure to address soaring crime rates and protect citizens over the past decade. “Five thousand people murdered under his watch,” she stated, “while he recused himself from Cabinet 101 times due to conflicts of interest.”

A Vision for Progress

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar outlined the UNC's transformative agenda, declaring:
  • Businesses Win with lower taxes, reduced bureaucracy, increased forex access, and a National Commission to curb predatory banking practices.
  • Families Win with no property taxes, lower utility rates, and legal firearm access for home defense.
  • Children Win with enhanced school security, mental health support, expanded scholarships, and the operational UWI Debe Campus.
  • Senior Citizens Win with protected pensions, continued CDAP access, and home medical visits.
  • Communities Win through revived safety patrols, 24-hour Health Centers, and investments in local infrastructure.
  • Healthcare Wins with new catheterization labs at major Hospitals.
  • Local Energy Sector Wins with support for micro and small enterprises.

Condemning PNM Inequality

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar accused the PNM of fostering a two-tiered justice system, citing the unresolved case of Stuart Young's stepdaughter, charged with drug and ammunition offenses. “How many young people rot in jail for petty crimes while others evade consequences?” she asked, condemning plans to “stifle free speech” through social media restrictions.

Confidence in Victory

With the UNC polling strongly nationwide, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar expressed unwavering confidence in the party’s path to victory. “The people are ready for change,” she declared. “When the UNC wins, Trinidad and Tobago wins.”
