Soldier Among TWO (2) Shot Dead By Police In Sangre Grande, Third Suspect Hospitalized
Two (2) men are dead and another wounded following a Police-involved shooting incident in Sangre Grande last night (Sunday 21st September, 2025). The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Enrique Garcia of Upper Cunapo Road, Sangre Grande, and his neighbour, 25-year-old Shyien “Nookie” Trancoso. Garcia was said to be a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment (TTR).
The incident was confirmed by Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, who said an AK-47 rifle was discovered at the crime scene. A third suspect is reportedly under Police guard at the Sangre Grande Hospital.
Speaking on the I95.5 Morning Show today (Monday 22nd September, 2025), Guevarro said the matter is at a very sensitive stage. He said the Officers received information, “about a particular intent of individuals and would have engaged in some surveillance and attempt to intercept. At the end of the engagement, two (2) persons were wounded and taken to the Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. An AK-47 rifle was recovered from the vehicle and investigations are continuing.”
According to reports, the North-Central Gang Intelligence Unit (NCGIU) received information, around 6:37 PM on Sunday night, that armed suspects in a red Honda Vezel (PEG 2602) at Jaraysingh Village, were waiting to carry out a robbery at a popular establishment after the CPL Cricket Finals. Upon arrival at the scene, Officers observed and monitored the vehicle before attempting to make an intervention.
Officers claimed the occupants of the vehicle opened fire on them, who in keeping with the TTPS’ Use of Force policy, returned fire in the direction of the assailants.
The wounded men were conveyed to the Sangre Grande Hospital by Eastern Division Task Force Officers, where two (2) were declared dead, around 7:27 PM the same night.
In addition to the AR-15 rifle, the TTPS said twenty-five (25) rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene.
Investigations are continuing.
