SRP Officer Shot Dead At Ministry Head Office At Kent House, Maraval
A Police Officer is dead following a shooting incident at the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government Head Office at Kent House, Maraval, on Thursday afternoon (11th September, 2025). The deceased has been identified as Special Reserve Police (SRP) Officer Jamal Charles, who joined the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) only six (6) months ago.
Reports state that Charles' colleague, another Officer, was playing with his service weapon inside a guard booth at the back entrance of the Ministry, when he pointed the firearm at Charles, around 3:18 PM. A single shot then rang out, fatally wounding Charles in the face.
In a Media Release following the tragic incident on Thursday, the Ministry said, “The Honourable Khadijah Ameen, Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, is deeply saddened to confirm the tragic passing of Special Reserve Police Officer Jamal Charles following an incident today at the Ministry's Head Office, Kent House, Maraval. Minister Ameen extends her heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Officer Charles, whose untimely loss has brought immense sorrow. She has spoken with the Minister of Homeland Security, the Honourable Roger Alexander, who has assured that a full investigation will be conducted. Minister Ameen emphasizes the importance of allowing the investigative process to take its course and respectfully urges against speculation at this time.”

According to preliminary reports, Officer Charles had just completed his shift outside the Minister's office and was about to leave the compound when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The Ministry said Officer Charles only recently joined the TTPS in March 2025. “In his short time of service, he distinguished himself through his commitment, discipline, and professionalism. His passing is a profound loss not only to his loved ones but also to the wider protective services family.”
Minister Ameen has also appealed to members of the public to respect the privacy of Officer Charles' family, friends, and colleagues as they grieve this painful loss.
The Ministry added, “In light of this tragedy, counseling and emotional support services are being made available to employees who may have been affected.”
The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government stands in solidarity with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and extends its full support to the loved ones of Officer Charles during this difficult time.”
