The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service said it regrets to inform of the death of an inmate who was housed at the Maximum Security Prison (MSP) in Arouca, on Christmas Day (Thursday 25th December, 2025). The deceased has been identified as Alfredo Jose Britto Cedeno, a Venezuelan national, who is suspected to have died as a result of heart failure.

In a Media Release on Thursday, the Prison Service said, “According to an interim report, Officers were conducting their rounds when Alfredo Jose Britto Cedeno (Prohibited Immigrant), who was remanded into custody for the offence of ‘trafficking marijuana,’ was observed to be unresponsive in his cell. The established protocols were immediately engaged, and the Medical Services responded. First-aid was rendered, and the inmate was taken to the Arima Health Facility for further medical management. He was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.”

The Venezuelan Embassy has been contacted by an assigned Welfare Officer, who informed of the inmate’s death.

The Prison Service notes that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this death is underway.
