T&TEC To Restore Lighting Along Elmina Clarke-Allen Highway After Vandalism

UPDATE: T&TEC said at 8:41 PM, over 60% of the street lights on the Elmina Clarke-Allen Highway were switched on, temporarily powered via mobile substations. Another substation will be energized shortly to power the additional lights. Repair work will then continue, to supply the lights from the grid.

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is advising that repair and restoration work along the Elmina Clarke-Allen Highway will commence later this evening (Thursday 23rd April, 2026), following a vandalism incident that resulted in all streetlights along the roadway being out of service.

In a Media Release today, T&TEC said while work is underway, approximately 90% of the streetlights will be temporarily powered by standby generators. It is expected that the lighting system should be operating normally by 1:00 AM on Friday (24th April, 2026).

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when using this roadway, as crews work to restore supply.

The Media Release concluded by saying, “This incident is a public safety concern and T&TEC urges anyone with information to call 474-8467 to provide information anonymously.”
