Energy Ministry RESPONDS To Recent Incidents Related To Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Cylinders

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) said it “expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have sadly lost their lives or have been injured in the recent incidents involving Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected during this challenging time.”

In a Media Release this afternoon (Thursday 23rd October, 2025), the Ministry said it “recognizes the public's concerns regarding these unfortunate incidents and reiterates its dedication to maintaining the highest safety standards in the handling, distribution, and use of LPG. Ensuring the safety of our citizens is our foremost priority.”

In light of these incidents, the Ministry notes that it has convened discussions with key stakeholders, including the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services (TTFS), and is collaborating with relevant organizations to enhance regulatory oversight, raise public awareness, and improve safety standards concerning LPG cylinders and related equipment.

According to the Ministry, “In the interest of ensuring a robust regulatory framework, the Ministry’s technical staff would have prepared and submitted draft LPG regulations in 2020 that were not progressed to the implementation stage. In this regard, the Honourable Ministers of Energy have instructed that these draft regulations be reviewed and updated as matter of urgency.”

The Ministry said it has also requested that the TTBS reconvene its Specifications Committee for LPG to review and update national standards. “This review will ensure that all LPG cylinders, accessories, and related infrastructure meet modern safety and performance requirements. The next meeting of the Committee is expected to be held in early November 2025.”

Engagements with the Trinidad and Tobago National Petroleum Marketing Company Limited (NP), Ramco Industries Limited, and Natpet Investments Company Limited (Natpet) are also actively being pursued by the Ministry, in order to assess and enhance existing inspection and safety protocols. “These discussions are focused on ensuring that all entities along the LPG supply chain are adhering to the highest operational and safety standards, thereby protecting both workers and consumers.”

The Ministry is emphasizing the importance of vigilance in the safe handling and use of LPG, which is essential at every level, from suppliers and distributors to households and end-users. “In partnership with various stakeholders, we will enhance public awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens on the proper practices for storing, connecting, and using LPG cylinders in both domestic and commercial environments.”

The MEEI is assuring the national community that it is “addressing this issue with the necessary urgency and seriousness. Our primary focus remains on enhancing regulatory oversight, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and preventing any future tragedies.”

The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Ministry expresses its gratitude to all stakeholders for their ongoing collaboration and reiterates its dedication to maintaining LPG as a safe and dependable energy source for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. Heartfelt condolences are once again extended to the bereaved family and friends of our citizens that have tragically lost their lives as a result of these LPG-related incidents.”
