The Office of the President announced a short while ago this afternoon (Wednesday 22nd October, 2025) that Acting President Wade Mark will appoint a new Chief Justice at 2:00 PM today, following the retirement of 65-year-old Chief Justice Ivor Archie. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at President’s House.

Several potential successors have been named, including Justices of Appeal Ronnie Boodoosingh, Geoffrey Henderson and Peter Rajkumar.

Chief Justice Archie previously announced that he will retire today (Wednesday 22nd October, 2025), having already notified the Acting President. He was Trinidad and Tobago’s Chief Justice for eighteen (18) years. Although the retirement age for Judges was raised in 2020, from sixty-five (65) to seventy (70) years. Archie said he had chosen to retire now on his own terms, rather than wait until he turned seventy (70).

Speaking during his recent address at the commemoration of the 2025 - 2026 law term, he stated that his departure from the judiciary was imminent. “I wish to advise that that time has arrived and today I indicated to the Acting President that I will retire on October 22nd, 2025.”

Archie added that this country has been good to him, stating that, “I hope that I have been equally good to my country. It has been an honour to serve. I wish my successor every success in the period ahead. May God guide his or her path as this new endeavour is commenced.”
