Venezuela Denounces ALL Gas Agreements With T&T; Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar RESPONDS

Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez announced at a Press Conference earlier today (Monday 27th October, 2025) that Venezuela has proposed that all of its gas agreements with Trinidad and Tobago be immediately suspended, which will also include the controversial Dragon gas deal. She said the proposal was being made by the board of Venezuelan State-owned company Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), to President Nicolas Maduro.

Rodriguez cited tensions with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, her previous statements and the country’s welcoming of U.S. forces in the Caribbean, as factors that led to its decision.

This latest development comes just one day after Venezuela accused Trinidad and Tobago of collaborating with the United States on a “false-flag” operation, which it claims is being carried out as the U.S. warship USS Gravely docked in Port-of-Spain yesterday (Sunday 26th October, 2025).

Rodriguez said during the Press Conference today, “We have just concluded a meeting of the leadership of the Ministry of Popular Power for Petroleum — all vice ministers present — together with the Board of Directors of PDVSA, accompanied by its president, vice presidents, and the Minister of Economy and Finance, who is also a member of this board.”

She added, “The leadership of both the Ministry and PDVSA have decided to propose to President Nicolás Maduro, the immediate denunciation of the Framework Agreement on Energy Cooperation between the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, signed in 2015 for ten (10) years and automatically renewed this February for another five (5). Article 13, paragraph 3, gives either party the authority to terminate it.”

According to Rodriguez, “This agreement covered broad areas of energy cooperation — joint gas field development, infrastructure projects, hydrocarbon initiatives, and monetization of shared resources. It is a comprehensive framework, but we are now responsibly proposing that the President terminate it immediately. As a result, all gas agreements between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago will be suspended.”

Shortly after Rodriguez‘s announcement, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar asserted that Trinidad and Tobago will not be blackmailed and is not dependent on any Venezuelan gas. She declared that no one — be it the Venezuelan Government, the People’s National Movement (PNM), CARICOM, or any other entity — will “pressure or blackmail” her Government into retreating from the fight against the drug cartels.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar said reports of Venezuela’s proposed gas suspension with T&T are not a cause for any grave concern. “Our future does not depend on Venezuela and never has. We have our plans and projects to grow our economy both within the energy and non-energy sectors,” she said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted mistakes made by the previous PNM administration, which she said relied heavily on the Dragon gas project. “The last PNM Government mistakenly placed all their hopes in the Dragon project. We have not done so, therefore we are not susceptible to any blackmail from the Venezuelans for political support,” she said.

Despite escalating tensions, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar emphasized that Trinidad and Tobago will continue to maintain cordial relations with Venezuela. “We continue to maintain peaceful relations with the Venezuelan people,” she added, underlining her Government’s commitment to diplomacy and regional stability.

Venezuela has previously denounced the heightened U.S. military presence in the region and the lethal strikes on boats allegedly involved in transporting narcotics to the United States. There have so far been ten (10) such strikes, killing at least forty-three (43) people.

Venezuela also alleged that the presence of the USS Gravely in T&T is part of an act of hostile aggression against its country.
