Clean Sweep: Prime Minister Congratulates Farley Augustine On ‘Historic Victory’ In THA Elections
Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, has congratulated the Honourable Farley Augustine, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and Leader of the Tobago People’s Party (TPP), following the party’s clean sweep of the THA elections on Monday (12th January, 2026).
The TTP defeated the People’s National Movement (PNM) by securing all fifteen (15) seats of the THA — delivering a resounding blow to the PNM and a second consecutive term in office for Augustine and the TPP.
In a statement issued early this morning (Tuesday 13th January, 2026), Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said, “I extend sincere congratulations, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, to the Honourable Farley Chavez Augustine, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly, and to the Tobago People’s Party (TPP) on their decisive and historic victory in the Tobago House of Assembly elections, securing all fifteen (15) seats and achieving a clean sweep across the island.”
She added, “I also warmly congratulate the people of Tobago on the peaceful conclusion of the electoral process and the resounding mandate they have delivered. This outcome reflects the confidence of the Tobagonian electorate in the leadership and vision presented for the future of the island. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago looks forward to continued cooperation and constructive engagement with the Tobago House of Assembly in advancing the social, economic, and institutional development of Tobago, for the benefit of all Tobagonians and our nation as a whole.”
Her statement concluded by saying, “I wish Chief Secretary Augustine, the elected members of the Assembly, and the entire Tobago People’s Party every success as they assume the responsibilities entrusted to them. May God guide and be with you as you serve the people of Tobago.”
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader and Political Leader of the PNM, Pennelope Beckles, MP, responded to the party’s historic 15 – 0 loss to the TPP, calling for reflection and renewal within the party.
In a statement issued on Monday night, Beckles said, “Tonight’s Tobago House of Assembly elections have returned the Tobago People’s Party to office for a second consecutive term. I extend congratulations to Chief Secretary Farley Chavez Augustine and all those who have been successful at the polls. On this occasion, the low voter turnout speaks to the level of public satisfaction. The PNM understands the necessity of reflection as we work toward rebuilding our party and regaining the trust and confidence of the people.”
She added, “I thank all who supported the Movement in Tobago, and I commend our fifteen (15) standard-bearers who offered themselves to service. To the PNM Tobago Island Council and the campaign team who supported this journey, I extend my thanks. I wish to thank Mr. Ancil Dennis for his service, leadership, dedication, and continued commitment to the people of Tobago and the People’s National Movement prior to and during this election campaign. I offer best wishes to the incoming Tobago House of Assembly, as its success is ultimately tied to Tobago’s progress.”
Her statement concluded by saying, “The People’s National Movement remains committed to constructive engagement, national unity, and the pursuit of a stronger and more united Trinidad and Tobago. We will regroup and return stronger and better ready to serve the people of Tobago, and of Trinidad and Tobago.”
