TATT Warns Broadcasters About Airing ‘Recent Statements About The Honourable Prime Minister’

UPDATE: In a scathing response to TATT, Dr. Keith Rowley issued the following statement via Facebook this afternoon (Saturday 21st March, 2026):

“You sound surprised by the TATT awakening. Isn’t that threatening of the media part of what is happening abroad and very well known to us for copying here?

Btw is the TATT a New organization in Trinidad and Tobago?

Where was the TATT when Jack Warner a Former Chairman and UNC acting Prime Minister and ILP leader, in an election campaign advised the nation of a person that he took to a lawyers’s office to record and sign off on a statement that supported his allegation made on his platform about the conduct of the then Prime Minister who he said was using taxpayer money to fund her playmates with State jobs? I didn’t hear from the TATT and the advisers then.

Also, it appears to be ok for the Prime Minister to go to The Parliament and lie about the PNM and its leadership being involved with criminal drug dealers and narco trafficking to build Balisier House. This after she ran a motion declaring the Opposition Leader as a rapist! She is only a victim when she is challenged.

Where the hell were all of these objectors and all those who now desire good conduct and elevation of standards to acceptable levels by office holders? Apparently when Mrs. Persad Bissessar is rampaging against the people that she denigrates on an ongoing basis that is satisfactory to some people.

Well, I’m sorry but once she makes the mistake of slandering me inside the Parliament I reserve my right and remain quite happy to respond as I see fit outside of the Parliament and if it results in a few extra dollars to the play [whe] punters then I am even happier and the hypocrites could take a hike until she attacks them and tell lies on them as is her habit because she is the Prime Minister.”

The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) said it “reaffirms its unwavering commitment to responsible broadcasting and the protection of all citizens from harmful or discriminatory content.” This in response to several television broadcasts which aired what has been widely deemed as derogatory remarks made by former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley towards current Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

In a Media Release on Friday (20th March, 2026), TATT said, “Public discourse surrounding recent statements about the Honourable Prime Minister, as aired on certain television broadcasts, has underscored the critical importance of maintaining taste and decency in our media landscape.”

TATT is therefore reminding broadcast concessionaires of their obligations under the terms of their Concessions, particularly section D9, which states that:

“The concessionaire shall not: (a) transmit any programme, information or other material which degrades or portrays in a negative manner or discriminates against or encourages discrimination against any person or group by reason of race, origin, class, religion or sex; ....”

TATT notes that it is “actively reviewing the matter and will take appropriate regulatory action where any broadcaster is found to be in breach of its Concession.”

The Media Release concluded by saying, “By upholding these standards, we continue to build a media environment that is fair, respectful, and reflective of the values of Trinidad and Tobago.”

More on this as it becomes available.
