Reports: BODY of 36-Year-Old Shashi Anand Rampersad Found In Forested Area In St. James

According to reports, the body of kidnapped businessman, 36-year-old Shashi Anand Rampersad, was found earlier today (Tuesday 28th January, 2025) in a forested area at Riverville Trace off Dibe Road in Long Circular, St. James. Rampersad, of Lange Park, Chaguanas, was abducted at Pierre Trace, Enterprise, Chaguanas, since 21st November, 2024, where he went to deliver a load of gravel.

A combined team of Police Officers, including those from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), acting on information provided to them by individuals involved in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Rampersad, embarked on an exercise early this morning in St. James, where they later found his remains in the forest.

It is alleged a ransom of $500,000 was demanded — of which $110,000 was dropped off at the side of Lloyd Street, San Juan, on 5th December, 2024. However, Rampersad’s kidnappers still murdered him. There was prior communication between his relatives and the man behind his abduction — alleged to be an inmate at the Remand Yard Prison.

Police and Prison Officers later locked down that portion of the prison and conducted several searches, during which several cellphones were seized. Officers are said to have found evidence on one of the devices, linking a prisoner to the abduction and ransom demand. The ransom collected in December 2024 was allegedly used to pay the bail of a man who was in the Remand Yard and lives on Upper 9th Avenue in Barataria and Pierre Trace in Enterprise.

The last time Rampersad’s relatives saw him alive was in a video sent by the kidnappers to show proof-of-life:

Several suspects have been in Police custody for the past two (2) weeks, while two (2) men have already been charged with Rampersad’s kidnapping. One of the men, Kareem Rodriguez, was refused bail when he appeared before a Master of the High Court on Monday (27th January, 2025). The charge accused Rodriguez of unlawfully seizing and taking away Rampersad without his consent and of holding him and preventing his release in exchange for a ransom.

Investigations are continuing.

More on this as it becomes available.
