TTPS Assures Public of Safety And Order In Tobago Ahead of Elections

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said it is aware of videos and reports circulating on social media showing fights and confrontations in Tobago, ahead of the Election Day tomorrow (Monday 12th January, 2026).

In a Media Release this evening (Sunday 11th January, 2026), the TTPS is advising the public that Police Officers are fully deployed across the island “to ensure public safety and the integrity of the electoral process. Any form of violence, intimidation, or disorderly behaviour will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law.”

The TTPS is urging citizens to “remain calm, desist from confrontation, and allow the democratic process to take place peacefully. Tobago must remain peaceful as you exercise your democratic rights.”

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to head to the polls on Monday as Tobago prepares for elections for the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), with political parties completing final mobilization efforts this weekend.

Political Analyst Dr. Bishnu Ragoonath is of the opinion that the two (2) major parties in contention – the Tobago People’s Party (TPP) and the People’s National Movement (PNM) – appear to be evenly matched. The other parties in the running are the Innovative Democratic Alliance and the Unity of the People, led by Dr. Denise Tsoiafatt Angus and Nickocy Phillips, respectively.

More on this as it becomes available.
