60-Year-Old Man Dies In House Fire In Barrackpore
The burnt remains of a man was found after a fire destroyed his Barrackpore home on Sunday evening (1st March, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 60-year-old Bachan Samlal of Sand Hill Trace, Barrackpore. He was said to have been a stroke patient.
According to reports, Samlal became trapped inside the small dwelling when it became engulfed in flames, shortly after 5:00 PM. An alarm was raised by his former common-law wife who lives next door. She told Police she had briefly left her home to pick breadfruit, approximately 200 feet away. Upon returning around 5:20 PM, however, she observed Samlal’s house ablaze and immediately contacted the Barrackpore Police Station.
Officers responded and met fire personnel from the Mon Repos Fire Station, who were actively battling the blaze.
The structure, described as a small concrete-and-board house measuring approximately ten (10) feet by fourteen (14) feet and valued at an estimated $40,000, was completely destroyed.
After the fire was extinguished, Fire Officers searched through the rubble and discovered the burnt remains of a man inside. The remains were subsequently identified as Samlal by Rampersad.
A District Medical Officer (DMO) also visited the scene, made certain pronouncements, and ordered the body removed to the San Fernando General Hospital mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are continuing into the cause of the deadly blaze.
More on this as it becomes available.
