P.M. Kamla Persad-Bissessar Departs Today For ‘Shield of The Americas’ Summit In Florida, Hosted By President Trump
Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, departs today (Friday 6th March, 2026) for the “Shield of the Americas” summit meeting in the United States, hosted by President Donald Trump. Trinidad and Tobago is one (1) of only two (2) CARICOM nations invited to participate in the high-level gathering.
During the summit meeting, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar is expected to engage directly with the President of the United States, as well as other senior officials, including Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, and Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright.
The T&T delegation will include the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Sean Sobers, Minister of Public Utilities and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Barry Padarath, and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Nicholas Morris.
In a Media Release this morning (Friday 6th March, 2026), the United National Congress (UNC) said, “During her absence, Minister Jearlean John will serve as Acting Prime Minister, ensuring the continued conduct of the people’s business. Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar extends warm wishes to all citizens for a safe and enjoyable weekend.”
The “Shield of the Americas” summit meeting is set to take place on Saturday (7th March, 2026) in Doral, Florida (part of the Miami metropolitan area) and will include the leaders of twelve (12) Latin American countries: Javier Milei of Argentina, Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, Rodrigo Paz Pereira of Bolivia, Rodrigo Chaves of Costa Rica, Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic, José Raúl Mulino of Panama, Santiago Peña of Paraguay, Nasry Asfura of Honduras, Mohamed Irfaan Ali of Guyana, and Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad and Tobago.
José Antonio Kast, Chile’s President-elect who will take office on 11th March, 2026, has also been invited.
