Prominent Businessman Found Dead In Car Park of Harbour View Apartments In Westmoorings — Firearm In Hand
An elderly businessman is dead following a shooting incident in the car park of Harbour View Apartments in Westmoorings on Monday afternoon (13th April, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Wayne Yip Choy, a prominent and influential businessman who investigators believe may have taken his own life.
According to reports, Officers responded to a report of two (2) loud explosions heard by the property manager at Harbour View Apartments on Ocean Boulevard, shortly before 2:00 PM. Upon arrival at the gated apartment complex, Officers found the body of Yip Choy lying face-down beneath a tree with apparent gunshot wounds. His licensed firearm was reportedly in his hand.
Emergency Health Services were alerted. A District Medical Officer (DMO) was also summoned, who pronounced Yip Choy dead at the scene and ordered the body removed to the Forensic Science Centre, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Crime scene investigators processed both the car park and the man’s apartment, seizing several items, including electronic devices, documents, and materials of investigative interest. A licensed firearm registered to the deceased, along with ammunition, was also recovered.
Police said preliminary enquiries, including the review of CCTV footage, suggest the man was alone in the car park at the time of the incident.
Yip Choy, a past President of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers' Association (TTMA), was widely recognized as a transformative figure in the local manufacturing sector, with a career spanning decades. He began his career in 1976 as Managing Director of a company called Sweetheart Cakes Limited, which was subsequently renamed Kiss Baking Company Limited. He spent a total of twenty-eight (28) years at the company.
Yip Choy was also the former Chief Executive Officer of both Carib Brewery and Angostura Holdings Limited (AHL), and served on the Board of Directors of Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) and Readymix (West Indies) Limited.
Ten (10) years ago, Yip Choy was awarded a $28 million landmark judgment against his former employer, Angostura, after he was fired. His tenure was pivotal in the company's turnaround, following its $1.2 billion debt after the collapse of CL Financial Limited in January 2009, Angostura's inability to produce financial statements for 2009 and subsequent delisting from the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange (TTSE).
Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding his death.
