TTPS Warns of Fake Email Circulating — Fraudulent Cybercrime Notice

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is advising members of the public of a fraudulent email currently in circulation, which falsely claims to be sent by the Commissioner of Police.

In a Media Release on Thursday (9th April, 2026), the TTPS said the email alleges that the recipient is under investigation for various cybercrime and criminal offences by local and international security agencies. It further instructs recipients to report to the Police Headquarters or the Cyber Crime Unit within twenty-four (24) hours, or face immediate arrest.

The TTPS said it “wishes to categorically state that this email is FAKE. At no time does the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service issue notices of investigation, arrest, or requests for appearance via unsolicited email in this manner. This message is a scam designed to intimidate and deceive recipients.”

Members of the public are strongly advised to:

  • Disregard and delete any such email immediately;
  • Do not respond, click on links, or download attachments;
  • Do not provide personal or financial information under any circumstances.

To safeguard against similar fraudulent attempts, the TTPS advises:

  • Verify the sender – Official TTPS communication will come through established and verifiable channels;
  • Be cautious of urgent or threatening language – Scammers often create panic to force quick action;
  • Check for inconsistencies – Poor grammar, inaccurate names and job titles, unofficial email addresses, and unusual instructions are common red flags;
  • Avoid sharing sensitive information via email unless you are certain of the source.

Persons who receive this or similar emails are encouraged to report it to the Police:

  • Contact the TTPS Cyber Crime Unit;
  • Report to the nearest Police Station;
  • Provide a copy or screenshot of the email to assist with investigations.

The Media Release concluded by saying, “The TTPS remains committed to protecting the public from cyber threats and urges all citizens to remain vigilant. Public awareness and co-operation are critical in combating cybercrime and preventing fraud.”

Please be guided accordingly.
