Cunupia Home Invasion: FOUR (4) Suspects Killed By Police, Others Still At Large
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has provided an updated statement regarding the ongoing joint security operation being conducted in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF), following an armed home invasion and robbery at a residence in Cunupia early this morning (Saturday 2nd May, 2026).
In a Media Release this afternoon, DCP Operations, Suzette Martin, said, “I can now confirm that an additional suspect was fatally shot after reportedly engaging Police Officers during an operation at approximately 12:30 PM today. This brings the total number of deceased suspects in connection with this matter to four (4).”
Three (3) of the suspects were fatally shot by Officers during an armed confrontation in the Jonathan Trace area of Cunupia. The fourth suspect was later discovered in a bushy area off Ramnarine Trace, Esmeralda Road, Cunupia, during a follow-up search operation and was also shot by Officers. He was taken to the Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Updated intelligence information gathered revealed that there are still two (2) suspects at large, and co-ordinated search and containment exercises are actively underway to locate and apprehend them.
According to DCP Martin, “This remains a developing operation, and as such, law enforcement personnel continue to pursue all leads with urgency and caution. The public is advised that there may be an increased Police and military presence in targeted areas as these exercises continue.”
The TTPS is reassuring citizens that “we remain resolute in protecting communities from violent criminal elements involved in home invasions and other serious offences. We will continue to act decisively, professionally, and within the law to bring offenders to justice. Further verified updates will be provided as the situation develop.”
The TTPS initially announced earlier today that three (3) persons were deceased, two (2) suspects are in custody, and efforts are continuing to locate two (2) others who remain at large, following a successful operation which was executed through strong interagency collaboration between the TTPS and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF), as part of the ongoing national response to violent criminal activity and home invasion offences.
According to Police reports, around 3:30 AM this morning (Saturday 2nd May, 2026), a 70-year-old male farmer from Cunupia was awakened by a loud noise at his home. He was then confronted by five (5) masked men wearing gloves, one of whom was armed with a firearm and announced a robbery. The assailants forcibly restrained the victim, tied him up and then escaped with $1,120 in cash and his cellphone.
CCTV footage captured the suspects on the move, heading towards Charles Street, Cunupia, where the home invasion occurred:
Acting on co-ordinated intelligence and joint operational planning, Officers and Soldiers moved swiftly, gave chase and intercepted the alleged assailants at Ramnarine Trace, off Esmeralda Road, in the vicinity of a supermarket. There was an exchange of gunfire and three (3) of the alleged assailants were fatally wounded, two (2) were arrested and two (2) others escaped.
DCP Intelligence & Investigations, Natasha George and DCP Operations, Suzette Martin, co-ordinated the operation, along with TTDF Lt. Commander, Sheldon Dougan and Operations Command Manager of the National Operations Centre (NOC), Johnny Abraham.
DCP Suzette Martin, NOC Manager Johnny Abraham, ACP Richard Smith, along with Snr. Supt. Montrichard, Snr. Supt. Bhwagandeen, Supt. Singh, ASP Hernandez and Ag. ASP Rampallard, and the TTPS Air Support Unit visited the scene.
The TTPS said at the time, “This outcome reflects the importance of unified law enforcement action, combining the investigative capacity of the TTPS with the operational support of the TTDF to target dangerous offenders and protect communities. The public is assured that both agencies remain fully committed to sustained joint operations aimed at suppressing violent crime, removing illegal firearms, apprehending wanted persons, and restoring public confidence and safety throughout Trinidad and Tobago.”
Further updates will be provided as information is confirmed.
