Woman Struck Dead By Vehicle While Crossing Churchill Roosevelt Highway, Near Walkover — Expect Traffic Delays

A woman is dead after she was struck by a pickup van while attempting to cross the Churchill Roosevelt Highway early this morning (Monday 11th May, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 74-year-old Ephrem Mary Pereira of Orna Trace, Cantaro Village, Santa Cruz.
According to reports, the incident occurred along the Westbound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, in the vicinity of the IBIS building, around 5:15 AM. She was reportedly attempting to cross the Highway near a walkover.
A 66-year-old man of Malabar, Arima, was said to be driving a brown Toyota Hilux, heading West along the Highway, when he reportedly noticed several vehicles ahead swerving suddenly. He attempted to avoid an object on the roadway but soon realized he had struck a pedestrian.
The driver immediately stopped nearby following the impact. His vehicle sustained damage to the front bumper and left headlamp area.
Police and Emergency Health Services were notified and responded. Upon arrival, Officers found Pereira lying motionless on the roadway with severe injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crime scene investigators and Officers of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch processed the area.
The body was later removed to the Forensic Science Centre, pending an autopsy.
Police said the 66-year-old driver was cautioned for intended prosecution, and his vehicle was towed to the Barataria Police Station.
The incident resulted in a massive traffic pileup for motorists heading to Port-of-Spain.
