Attorney General: State of Emergency Remains In Effect Until Midnight On 17th June, 2026

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking to clarify misinformation currently circulating on certain social media platforms regarding the duration of the ongoing State of Public Emergency.

In a Media Release this afternoon (Wednesday 3rd June, 2026), the Attorney General’s Office said, “Pursuant to the procedures established by the Constitution, the State of Emergency remains in effect until Midnight on June 17th, 2026, and not June 3rd, 2026, as erroneously reported on these social media platforms.”

According to the Office, the facts surrounding the State of Emergency are as follows:

  1. By Legal Notice No. 39 of 2026, the President declared, by Proclamation, that a State of Public Emergency existed in Trinidad and Tobago with effect from March 3, 2026.
  2. In accordance with section 9(2) of the Constitution, the Proclamation initially remained in force for fifteen (15) days and would have expired at Midnight on March 17, 2026 (the first day being March 3, 2026 and the fifteenth day being March 17, 2026).
  3. In accordance with section 10(1) of the Constitution, the Proclamation was extended by a simple majority resolution of the House of Representatives on March 13, 2026, for a period of three (3) months with effect from March 18, 2026 and ending at Midnight on June 17, 2026.
