Venezuelan Woman Dies At Hospital After Vehicle Crashes Into Her Scooter In Cunupia — Other Driver Fails DUI Test
A woman has died at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) in Mount Hope, days after she was critically injured in a collision early Monday morning (1st June, 2026) in Cunupia, involving an electric scooter and a motor vehicle. The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Venezuelan national, Rusimine Riaz, of Mon Plasir Road, Cunupia.
According to reports, the collision occurred around 2:10 AM along Jerningham Junction Road in the vicinity of Lucky Junction. Police Officers responding to the scene observed a white Nissan Wingroad (PBZ 7116) facing South along the roadway. They also found Riaz lying at the front of the vehicle next to a red electric scooter, with visible injuries about her body.
The injured woman was conveyed to the Chaguanas Health Facility for emergency medical treatment. However, due to the seriousness of her condition, she was later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) in Mount Hope, where she subsequently succumbed to her injuries.
Medical reports indicate that Riaz suffered polytrauma, including a fractured left patella (broken kneecap), a fracture to the neck and right femur (thigh bone), injuries to her cervical spine, and a traumatic brain injury. Doctors noted that the injuries were consistent with high-velocity blunt force trauma.
Riaz is said to have been returning to her apartment at Mon Plasir Road at the time of the accident, after completing work at a food cart along Rodney Road in Endeavour, Chaguanas.
Police said the driver of the Nissan Wingroad identified himself as Daniel Moses. While speaking with Moses, Officers allegedly detected a strong scent of alcohol on his breath, observed that his speech was slurred and noted that his eyes were bloodshot.
When asked whether he had consumed alcohol, Moses allegedly replied, “Yes sir, I drink.”
Police informed the driver that he was required by law to submit to a breath analysis, to which he reportedly agreed before being conveyed to the Cunupia Police Station.
A breathalyzer test was administered, which showed the suspect was above the legal driving limit, resulting in his arrest.
Investigations are continuing into the fatal crash.
More on this as it becomes available.
