Ralph Gonsalves OUT As SVG Prime Minister In Historic, Overwhelming Defeat In Polls
UPDATE (29/11/25): Gonsalves confirmed that he will take up the role of Opposition Leader when Parliament reconvenes, following a resounding defeat at the polls. In a firm and defiant address during a Press Conference, he said his party remains strong, disciplined, and prepared to hold the new Government accountable from day one.
UPDATE: Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, has congratulated SVG, Dr. Godwin Friday and the NDP in a statement issued last night: “Tonight, I congratulate the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on a successful General Election, where a resounding democratic mandate was given to the New Democratic Party (NDP) and Dr. Godwin Friday, the Prime Minister Elect. I commend the citizens of Saint Vincent for upholding the highest ideals of democracy. May God bless the newly-elected Government as they begin this new chapter of service to the people of Saint Vincent.”
Dr. Ralph Gonsalves’ 24-year reign as Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is now over following a stunning and historic political upset in the country’s General Elections on Thursday (27th November, 2025). Preliminary results show a massive nationwide shift, as voters turned decisively against the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP), which was attempting to secure an unprecedented sixth consecutive term in office.
The New Democratic Party (NDP), helmed by former Opposition Leader Dr. Godwin Friday, captured an overwhelming fourteen (14) out of fifteen (15) Parliamentary seats, which once officially confirmed, will clear the path for Dr. Friday to become the new Prime Minister of SVG. His campaign, which centred on economic reform, governance accountability, and renewed opportunities for young people, resonated with voters across mainland St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
While Dr. Gonsalves reportedly retained his own constituency seat, his party was reduced to just one (1) seat in Parliament, marking its most devastating defeat in modern history.
The 14 – 1 result signals more than a change in Government; it represents a dramatic political realignment after nearly a quarter-century of one-party dominance.
Celebrations are said to have erupted across multiple constituencies as NDP supporters marked what many are calling a “new chapter” for the nation.
More on this as it becomes available.
