20-Year-Old Man Struck Dead By Vehicle Near Mid Centre Mall After Leaving Bar

A man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle off the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway in Chaguanas early Saturday morning (16th May, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Brian Lalla of Cashew Gardens, Longdenville.

According to reports, the fatal accident occurred near the lay-by leading from the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway to the Chaguanas Main Road, in the vicinity of Mid Centre Mall, around 12:50 AM. A silver Nissan Almera was said to be proceeding North along the Highway, when the 39-year-old driver of St. Mary’s Village, South Oropouche, merged onto the lay-by and observed two (2) men walking along the left side of the roadway.

One of the pedestrians, later identified as Lalla, allegedly drifted into the path of the vehicle and was struck, causing him to be thrown several feet onto the nearby grassy area.

Police and Emergency Health Services were notified. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and conveyed the injured man to the Chaguanas Health Facility for emergency medical treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Lalla’s younger brother, 18-year-old Jeremiah Maharaj, who was reportedly walking with him at the time, said they had been liming and drinking at a bar in Chaguanas prior to the accident, and that the victim had been staggering moments before he entered the path of the oncoming vehicle. Maharaj was not injured.

Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

More on this as it becomes available.
