66-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Set Ablaze By Son During Argument At Penal Home
A woman was hospitalized after she was allegedly set on fire by her son during a domestic dispute at their home in Penal on Monday (3rd August, 2026). The victim has been identified as 66-year-old Tara Bridgelal of Rochard Road, Penal.
According to reports, the family had cooked food and were liming and drinking downstairs, when an argument started between the victim and her son, 40-year-old Regan Bridgelal. At some point, Regan’s father, Chaitram Bridgelal, left the scene while the argument continued between Tara and Regan. The woman allegedly went upstairs and was soon followed by Regan, where it is alleged he threw a liquid on her in a bathroom before setting her ablaze.
However, in an interview with Crime Watch host, Ian Alleyne, Regan, who openly admitted to drinking and smoking marijuana occasionally, denied the allegations, stating that he attempted to put out the fire by throwing water on his mother. He claims he does not know how the fire started.
Tara was conveyed to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she was treated for extensive burns to her face and neck, and listed in critical condition.
Reports state that Tara initially told medical staff her injuries resulted from a gas cylinder explosion, but later disclosed that her son was allegedly responsible for setting her on fire.
Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
More on this as it becomes available.
