Met Office Issues Hazardous Seas Alert For TWENTY (20) Hours

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Hazardous Seas Alert (Yellow Level) for twenty (20) hours. The Alert begins at 8:00 PM tonight (Friday 17th October, 2025) and will remain in effect until 4:00 PM on Saturday (18th October, 2025) for coastal areas of Northern Tobago, Northeastern Tobago and, to a lesser extent, Northern Trinidad.

According to the Met Office, high energy, Northerly, long-period swells of up to fifteen (15) seconds, in combination with Spring Tides, are expected to affect the islands, initially Tobago from Friday night (17th October, 2025), then gradually and intermittently affecting Trinidad.

Impacts will include agitated seas with exacerbated conditions at High Tides, larger than normal breakers with large, battering waves in the surf zone, disruption of near-shore activities, including fishing, swimming and boat moorings, intrusion of salt water and displacement of sand, further than the average reach point.

Instructions:

  • All marine interests should carefully monitor nearshore/coastal sea conditions and exercise caution along identified areas.
  • Restrict near-shore marine activities.
  • Secure coastal property.
  • Continue to monitor updates from official sites: TTMS at www.metoffice.gov.tt and access more information and instructions from www.odpm.gov.tt.

Please continue to pay attention to the latest forecasts, alerts, and information issued by the TTMS.
