Ministry Clarifies Misinformation On Defensive Driving And Insurance Requirements

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is addressing misinformation circulating on social media and other platforms, regarding an alleged $10,000 fine imposed on persons under the age of twenty-five (25) for failing to complete a defensive driving course as a condition for obtaining motor vehicle insurance.

In a Media Release today (Wednesday 14th January, 2026), the Ministry said at this time, there is no provision under the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, including the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act or its subsidiary legislation, that requires persons under the age of twenty-five (25) years to complete a defensive driving course as a mandatory condition for obtaining or maintaining motor vehicle insurance.

The Ministry is urging the public to “remain vigilant against misinformation in the public domain and to rely only on official Government communication channels for accurate and verified information.”

Please be guided accordingly.
