Education Minister Officially Launches Revised National School Code of Conduct
“As education continues to evolve in a rapidly changing world, the systems that guide and protect school communities must also advance.” This according to the Ministry of Education.
Dr. the Honourable Michael Dowlath, Minister of Education, officially launched the Revised National School Code of Conduct on Wednesday (4th March, 2026), reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to safe and supportive school environments across Trinidad and Tobago.
In a Media Release, the Ministry said, “The updated Code reflects changes in legislation, developments in technology and the realities of today’s education landscape, ensuring that schools are equipped to respond effectively to emerging challenges.”
In delivering the feature address, Dr. Dowlath underscored the importance of this revision: “There can be no sustained improvement in teaching and learning without order, safety and discipline in our schools. If learning is our core mission then discipline is not peripheral, it is foundational. When classrooms are disrupted, instructional time is lost. When teachers feel unsupported, morale declines. When serious incidents escalate, fear replaces focus. And then academic performance suffers. This revised National School Code of Conduct is therefore not about punishment. It is about protecting learning.”
The Ministry notes that Wednesday’s launch “brought together several key stakeholders, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin, school principals and representatives of the National Parent Teacher Association and principals’ associations, reflecting a co-ordinated and comprehensive approach to discipline in schools.”
The Media Release concluded by saying, “The revised framework is designed to foster supportive and respectful school communities where every child is empowered to learn, grow and succeed.”
More on this as it becomes available.
