WASA Advises of Reduced Production At DESALCOTT Due To Raw Water Challenges

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is updating the national community on operational adjustments currently underway at the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT) facility. Due to recent changes in the quality of the source water entering the plant, there has been a temporary reduction in the amount of water produced and subsequently supplied to WASA.

In a Media Release today (Thursday 5th March, 2026), the Authority said DESALCOTT has advised that since 22nd February, 2026, they have “observed changes in the raw seawater at their intake. These variations, which are usually a natural occurrence in raw water sources, have resulted in an above-normal presence of organic material. To protect the integrity of the equipment and ensure the final quality of the drinking water, the plant's processes have had to adjust accordingly.”

According to WASA, “It is important to note that there is no risk to public health. Water quality remains uncompromised, and all treated water supplied by DESALCOTT continues to meet the highest safety standards. Investigations are ongoing, with sampling being conducted in surrounding areas, including the Couva River outlet, as part of the monitoring protocol to better understand the factors influencing the raw water supply.”

WASA added, “While production levels remained largely stable throughout late February, the recent shift in raw water conditions prompted an operational adjustment on March 2nd. Output was carefully managed to ensure treatment processes remained effective, resulting in a temporary reduction that is expected to impact water supply to communities normally served by the DESALCOTT facility.”

Affected areas include:

  • Caroni, Warrenville, Cunupia, Chaguanas, Caparo, Chase Village, Couva, Point Lisas, California, Claxton Bay, Plaisance Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, City of San Fernando, Vistabella, Gasparillo, Marabella, South West Union Hall, Pleasantville, Palmiste, Phillipine, Duncan Village, Esperance, Gulf View, Bel Air, La Romain, South Oropouche, Otaheite, Rousillac, Aripero, parts of La Brea, Avocat, Fyzabad, parts of Siparia including De Gannes Village and Quarry Village, San Francique, Debe, Syne Village, Lowkie Trace, Sunrees Road, and Mora Dam Road.

WASA said it is “fully committed to working closely with DESALCOTT to monitor the situation and manage available resources, with the shared goal of returning operations to normalcy in the shortest possible time. The Authority urges customers to use water wisely and to store an adequate supply during periods when service delivery proves challenging. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.”

UPDATE (18/04/26): A post-mortem examination conducted at the Forensic Science Centre on Friday (17th April, 2026) revealed that Frederick Aaron Stevenson died from blunt force trauma to the head, with investigators alleging he was killed with a sledgehammer before his body was dumped in a forested area off Esmeralda Road, Las Lomas. Investigators believe Stevenson was lured to the home of James Dwaraka under the pretext of carrying out repairs on an air conditioning unit, where it is alleged he was attacked and fatally struck with a sledgehammer on the same day he was reported missing, Saturday 11th April, 2026. UPDATE (24/04/26): The Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago announced this morning (Friday 24th April, 2026) that the relocation of domestic operations, scheduled to begin from today, has been postponed until further notice. According to the Authority, “The planned redirection of domestic passengers through international checkpoints will not take effect at this time. We appreciate the continued co-operation of our stakeholders and the public as preparations continue.” All domestic passengers will therefore continue to be processed through the Domestic Departures area on the ground floor of the Piarco International Airport, with standard check-in and security procedures remaining in place. A woman was found dead at her apartment in Cunupia on Friday evening (17th April, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Anna Lalla, a self-employed hairdresser. Lalla, who may have been pregnant at the time, was discovered unresponsive at her home in an apparent suicide.
