Man Armed With Cutlass And Hammer Shot Dead By Police In San Fernando
A man is dead following a Police-involved shooting incident in San Fernando early Sunday morning (26th April, 2026). The deceased has been identified as Shivanan Jogie of Railway Line Road, Victoria Village, San Fernando.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), Officers responded to a report of a wounding incident at Railway Line Road, Victoria Village, San Fernando, around 1:00 AM on Sunday morning, where EHS personnel had requested assistance.
Upon arrival at the scene, the said Officers were escorted to an unpainted two-storey structure and to a bedroom on the upper floor of the building, where they observed a man lying on a bed suffering from a wound to the head. The man was conveyed for medical treatment.
He was later identified as Quesi Alfred of Railway Line Road, Victoria Village, San Fernando.
The Officers subsequently received further information and proceeded to another location at Railway Line Road, Victoria Village. Upon arrival on the premises, which was found to be a flat concrete structure with an unsecured yard, the Officers were then approached by a man of East Indian descent, identified as Shivanan Jogie, who was armed with a cutlass in his left hand and a hammer in his right.
The TTPS said he then menacingly approached the Officers who apprehended immediate danger and in keeping with the Use of Force policy, discharged one (1) round in the direction of the man, resulting in injuries. He was conveyed to seek medical attention but subsequently succumbed to his injuries whilst being attended to.
The victim of the wounding remains warded in a critical condition at a medical institution.
The TTPS notes that this matter is “currently under active investigation and remains at a sensitive stage. Investigative procedures have been initiated, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are being thoroughly examined.”
The TTPS is assuring the public that all Police-involved shootings are “subject to rigorous review, in keeping with established protocols and the law. We appeal to members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigative process to take its course. Further updates will be provided as soon as it is appropriate to do so.”
