TTPS Clarifies Misattributed CAPA Data In Media Publication

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said it wishes to address and correct misinformation published by a media entity regarding data attributed to the Crime and Problem Analysis Branch (CAPA).

In a Media Release on Friday (24th April, 2026), the TTPS said, “The Crime and Problem Analysis Branch (CAPA) is firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and integrity in all information disseminated, recognizing the significant impact that inaccurate or misleading data can have on public perception and confidence in the Organization.”

According to the TTPS, “It has come to the attention of the TTPS that a recent media publication stated: ‘Recent CAPA data ranks Tobago Division as among the areas with the highest gang-related murders.’ The TTPS categorically states that CAPA has not produced, supported, or communicated any such analysis or conclusion. The records held by CAPA do not substantiate this claim. The Service considers it regrettable that CAPA was referenced in this manner, as it misrepresents the work of the Branch and has the potential to contribute to public misinformation.”

The TTPS said it “takes this opportunity to respectfully remind all media practitioners of the importance of verifying information with official sources and upholding the highest standards of journalistic responsibility.”

In light of this matter, the TTPS is “requesting that the necessary corrections be made to rectify the misinformation published and ensure the public is accurately informed.”

The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service appreciates the prompt attention and co-operation of the media in maintaining accurate and responsible reporting.”
