Cargo Plane Carrying Prohibited Dangerous Items Impounded At Piarco Airport — Pilots, Crew Members Detained
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is advising the national community that a security‑related matter involving a cargo aircraft at the Piarco International Airport on Thursday (14th May, 2026), is currently engaging the attention of State security agencies.
Reports indicate that the cargo aircraft may have been carrying explosives and was en route to another destination when it landed in Trinidad. Authorities have not disclosed the exact nature of the cargo found onboard the aircraft.
In a statement issued this morning (Friday 15th May, 2026), the TTPS said, “In keeping with the heightened security posture under the ongoing State of Emergency, routine checks identified irregularities requiring immediate precautionary action. The aircraft was secured, the crew accounted for, and all relevant national security units activated in accordance with established protocols. At no time was there any threat to the travelling public, Airport operations, or the wider national community. The situation remained calm, controlled, and professionally managed.”
The TTPS notes that this matter “now forms part of an active, multi‑agency national security investigation. In light of recent intelligence assessments and international security obligations, no further operational details can be released at this time.”
However, the TTPS is assuring the public that “all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Additional information will be provided only when it is safe and appropriate to do so.”
Addressing “Urgent Questions” in Parliament a short while ago this afternoon (Friday 15th May, 2026), Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, confirmed that two (2) pilots and six (6) crew members of the aircraft, which landed at the Piarco International Airport on Thursday, have been detained for questioning in connection with prohibited dangerous items found onboard.
The Minister said agencies under the Ministry are dealing with this matter and there is no need for panic. The aircraft has also been impounded.
Investigations are continuing.
