Facebook Marketplace: Man Pays $2,700 Cash For PlayStation 5 In Port-of-Spain — Finds 3 Big Stones In Box Instead of Console
Officers of the Besson Street Police District are investigating a report of larceny by trick involving the fraudulent sale of a Sony PlayStation 5 through Facebook Marketplace.
The incident was reported by a 20-year-old man of Oropune Gardens, Piarco.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), Officers were informed that on Sunday 4th May, 2026, the victim contacted a Facebook account operating under the name “Luke Lewis,” regarding the purchase of a PlayStation 5 valued at TT $2,700.
On Thursday (8th May, 2026), at approximately 6:00 PM, the victim met a male suspect at the corner of Park Street and Charlotte Street, Port-of-Spain, near the Republic Bank carpark. The suspect allegedly handed the victim a black plastic bag containing a box, after which the victim paid the agreed sum of money.
The suspect then left the area on foot heading East along Bath Street.
However, upon later inspecting the package, the victim discovered that the box contained three (3) large stones instead of the advertised gaming console.
The suspect is described as:
- Male of African descent.
- Slim build.
- Dark brown complexion.
- Approximately 5’9” tall.
- Last seen wearing dark clothing.
Investigators have since visited the scene, obtained a statement from the victim, and requested CCTV footage as inquiries continue.
The TTPS is reminding members of the public to exercise caution when conducting transactions through online marketplaces.
Persons are advised to:
- Meet in safe, public locations.
- Inspect items thoroughly before making payment.
- Avoid carrying large sums of cash.
- Consider completing transactions at Police Stations or secure locations.
