T&TEC Seeks Public’s Help In Identifying Vandals At WASA Beetham Substation
The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is seeking the public's assistance in identifying the person or persons involved in two (2) acts of vandalism at its WASA Beetham Substation in Port-of-Spain.
In a Media Release on Saturday (30th May, 2026), T&TEC said its emergency crews responded to an outage originating from its WASA Beetham Substation at approximately 2:00 PM on Friday (29th May, 2026), where several sections of control cables had apparently been cut and removed. Crews were able to quickly transfer the load to another circuit and restore supply to affected customers within thirty (30) minutes.
However, at approximately 6:00 AM on Saturday morning, T&TEC said another intrusion occurred.
Security footage captured a man entering the substation compound who, in attempting to cut cables, triggered an explosion and fire. The man hurriedly fled the scene. The fire, which damaged the switch house and other ancillary infrastructure, was extinguished by the Fire Service shortly afterwards.
The resulting outage only affected the WASA Beetham Wastewater Treatment Plant, as all other customers had been transferred to an alternate supply. Power was restored to the Plant just after 8:00 AM.
General Manager of T&TEC, Ian Ramrattan, said “this illegal and destructive behaviour not only puts the lives of those involved at risk, but also causes significant inconvenience to customers. While the cost of the repairs is not insignificant, we are already mobilizing to conduct emergency repairs. However, the extent of the damage could affect the reliability of the supply, as we are operating on the backup circuit.” He called for people who may know the persons involved in these and recent acts of vandalism to contact T&TEC with any information that could assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
T&TEC said it “takes this opportunity to remind the public that tampering with or interacting with T&TEC's infrastructure can cause physical harm, including electrocution and serious injury. For your safety, please avoid any contact with overhead lines, substations and related equipment.”
Persons with information regarding these acts of vandalism are urged to call 474-8467 and share that information anonymously.
More on this as it becomes available.
