2-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized After Ingesting Unknown Poisonous Substance
The Child Protection Unit and the Children’s Authority are investigating the circumstances in which a 2-year-old girl allegedly ingested a poisonous substance at her home in Point Fortin on Boxing Day (26th December, 2024). The child is currently warded at the San Fernando General Hospital.
The incident is said to have only been reported to Police more than a week later, on 3rd January, 2025, as the mother said she was in the Hospital with the child.According to reports, the mother left her baby in the care of her 64-year-old grandfather at their home at Bryant Street, Strikers Villas, New Village, Point Fortin, and went to work around 8:00 AM on Boxing Day. However, upon returning home around 2:15 PM, she saw her daughter pointing to her mouth, which appeared dark in colour.
She immediately took her to the Point Fortin Hospital. The child was later transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in stable condition.
Medical personnel confirmed that the child had ingested an unknown poisonous substance.
She was released from the ICU on Friday (3rd January, 2025) and warded at the Pediatric Unit.
Investigations are continuing.
