Confirmed: Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher ‘Arrested And Detained’
UPDATE: According to reports, the Police Commissioner has fallen ill while in custody. Harewood-Christopher, who was moved from the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain, to the St. Clair Police Station last night (Thursday 30th January, 2025), complained of feeling unwell and was taken for treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has confirmed that Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood-Christopher, was officially arrested and detained on Thursday (30th January, 2025). The announcement was made by DCP Suzette Martin in a Press Conference held a short while ago this morning (Friday 31st January, 2025). She told the media the investigation is still in progress. The Police Commissioner’s detention came a day after former head of the Strategic Services Agency (SSA), Roger Best, was also arrested and detained.
Harewood-Christopher, the country’s first female Police Commissioner, spent Thursday night at the St. Clair Police Station, Port-of-Spain after being detained for questioning in relation to ongoing investigations into the Strategic Services Agency (SSA). She is being questioned in relation to the issuance of two (2) Firearm User’s Licences (FULs) for AX2 bolt-action sniper rifles by the SSA.
As a result, she could be facing a charge of misbehaviour in public office, among any other potential charges, after key documents pertaining to the FULs went missing.

The Police Commissioner was said to be in high spirits on Thursday (30th January, 2025) when she was being questioned by her subordinates. Speaking with Guardian Media today (Friday 31st January, 2025), Harewood-Christopher’s husband, Theldon, said he last saw his wife on Thursday at her office: “I saw her yesterday at the headquarters and she’s in good spirits.”
The retired Police Officer said he was “doing okay” and in the dark about the investigation, trying his best to keep up with his wife’s detention. “Once she’s seen us around, you know, she will have that good spirit. When we are not around, I don’t know what goes on, but so far, I believe she’s speaking, up to this time,” he said, adding that he was unable to speak to his wife about her detention.
He noted that he is learning about his wife’s detention from the media.
Investigations are continuing.
