Teenager Shot By Police In Cunupia After Firing Gel Blaster Toy Gun In Their Direction

Five (5) persons in total were arrested, two (2) rifles, two (2) gel blaster guns and quantities of ammunition seized by Officers during ongoing State of Emergency Operations conducted in the Eastern, Port-of-Spain, North-Eastern and Central Divisions.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), two (2) men were arrested and two (2) gel blaster guns, resembling that of firearms, seized following a Police-involved shooting incident in Cunupia early this morning (Sunday 5th January, 2025). Officers responded to a report of six (6) men being observed with firearms in the Cunupia district, around 12:20 AM, and conducted a search of the area.

Officers subsequently observed two (2) men dressed in dark clothing with objects resembling firearms in their possession, running in their direction.

The Officers made known their presence to the men and instructed them to drop the weapons. One of the men allegedly fired the said object at the Officers, who in keeping with the Use of Force policy, fired back in the direction of the assailant.

The men dropped to the ground and were arrested, while two (2) gel blaster guns were seized.

Reports state a 17-year-old was shot and wounded by Officers during the incident.

Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood-Christopher, has previously cautioned the public on the misuse of gel blaster toy guns, saying, “Whilst gel blasters may be marketed as toys, the models that closely resembles real firearms are prohibited. Furthermore, the indiscriminate use of such devices, especially in public spaces or towards unsuspecting individuals, is dangerous and poses a threat to public safety.”

Meanwhile, Officers of the Valencia Criminal Investigations Department (CID) conducted an exercise between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Saturday (4th January, 2025), which also included personnel of the Special Operations Unit, the Warrant Section and the Valencia Police Station.

During the exercise, the Officers proceeded to Cuber Street, Valencia, where they conducted a search of a bushy area, where they found a high-powered rifle and twenty (20) rounds of 5.56 ammunition, along with a quantity of cannabis.

Two (2) male suspects, a 25-year-old and a 24-year-old, both of Valencia, were arrested in connection with the finds.

Also, an exercise was conducted in the Port-of-Spain and North Eastern Divisions by Officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Saturday. During the exercise, Officers proceeded to the Morvant home of a female suspect, where they conducted a search. During the search, Officers found a rifle and a magazine, loaded with twenty-six (26) rounds of 5.56 ammunition.

The 32-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the find.

Investigations are ongoing into the above matters.
