Active Tropical Wave Approaches: Met Office Issues Adverse Weather Alert Until Monday Night
UPDATE (20/10/25 - 10:30 AM): The axis of the active Tropical Wave is now over the Caribbean sea, as it continues to move steadily away from the region. Despite this, trailing moisture and instability are expected to occasionally produce pockets of heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. While conditions may become settled at times, the atmosphere will remain fairly conducive to impactful weather.
UPDATE (19/10/25 - 3:00 PM): Showers and isolated thunderstorms have been occurring across both islands over the last several hours, bringing heavy downpours and gusty winds in some areas, with a continued trend of more frequent activity occurring over Tobago.
The axis of this strong Tropical Wave has passed Trinidad and Tobago, with trailing moisture and unstable conditions maintaining a high chance of intermittent rainfall, some of which may be heavy and accompanied by showers and isolated thunderstorms.
These conditions are still expected to continue through Monday. While conditions may become settled at times, the atmosphere will remain conducive to impactful weather activity. The Wave itself maintains a low (30%) chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone over the next two (2) days, as it continues to move away from the area.
UPDATE (18/10/25 - 3:30 PM): Showers and isolated thunderstorms occurred across both islands over the last several hours, bringing heavy downpours and gusty winds in some areas, with more frequent activity over Tobago. The atmosphere remains moist and unstable as an active Tropical Wave move across the area. There is a high chance of intermittent rainfall, some of which may be heavy and accompanied by showers and isolated thunderstorms and these conditions are expected to continue through Monday. While conditions may briefly ease at times, the atmosphere will remain conducive to impactful weather activity.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) for a total of fifty-eight (58) hours. The Alert begins at 12:00 PM on Saturday (18th October, 2025) and will remain in effect until 10:00 PM on Monday (20th October, 2025) for Trinidad and Tobago and surrounding waters.
According to the Met Office, periods of showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected from 12:00 PM on Saturday, followed by more impactful weather from Sunday morning through Monday, as an active Tropical Wave is forecast to move across the area during this time. There is a high (75%) chance of intermittent rainfall, heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms.
Impacts:
- Gusty winds can occur in the vicinity of heavy showers/thunderstorms, which may displace loose outdoor items and further agitate seas.
- Heavy downpours can lead to street/flash flooding as well as localized ponding and may trigger landslides/landslips, especially along hillsides and other vulnerable areas.
The Met Office notes that forecast conditions remain dynamic and may continue to evolve over the coming days — it will therefore continue to monitor and provide updates as necessary.
A Hazardous Seas Alert (Yellow Level) has also been issued until 4:00 PM on Saturday (18th October, 2025).
