26-Year-Old St. Helena Man Dies In Violent Highway Crash; FOUR (4) Others Injured
A man is dead and four (4) others hospitalized following a road traffic accident along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, near the Piarco walkover, early this morning (Friday 26th December, 2025). The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Emmanuel Ottley of St. Helena, who was ejected from the vehicle during the violent crash.
According to reports, a silver Nissan Note (PDH 6719) was traveling West along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, around 3:54 AM, when, shortly after passing another vehicle, the car suddenly veered off the roadway and slammed into the metal railings along the side of the Highway.
The car then ploughed into a bus shed, before crashing down into a ravine, which runs parallel to the roadway.
The impact caused the car to overturn, after which it collided violently with additional railings along the pedestrian walkover linking Oropune Gardens to the Highway, leaving the vehicle mangled.
During the violent sequence of collisions, Ottley was ejected from the vehicle.
An eyewitness, a 30-year-old man from Pinto Road, Arima, told Police that he observed the Nissan Note veer sharply off the Highway before crashing. Several occupants were seen attempting to exit the mangled vehicle, without success.
Police, Fire and Emergency Health Services were notified of the accident. Ottley‘s body was subsequently found approximately thirty (30) feet from the wreckage, lying face-down and partially submerged in the ravine, with severe head and neck injuries.
A District Medical Officer (DMO) was summoned, who pronounced him dead at the scene at 5:43 AM, and ordered his body removed, pending a post-mortem examination.
With debris from the destroyed railings and bus shed littered across the scene, Ottley’s mother arrived and formally identified his body. His death was later attributed to a broken neck.
Four (4) other occupants of the vehicle were trapped inside the wreckage. Fire Officers, led by Fire Sub Officer Balkaran, worked in the early-morning darkness to extract the injured survivors from the twisted metal. They were then conveyed to Hospital for emergency medical treatment. The injured victims have been identified as follows: The wrecked vehicle was subsequently towed from the scene and taken to the Piarco Police Station for further examination. Investigations are continuing into the fatal crash. More on this as it becomes available. [Source: Ian Alleyne]
